HYGGE AND HELLO!

Let's kick off our weekend with a cozy toast, a friendly round of introductions, and some fun Danish trivia. 

Come as you are, bring your favorite mug, and get ready for a weekend of good company and warm connection. 

 We'll even get a head start on Saturday's cooking session: mixing up the remoulade, prepping the  Smørrebrød rye bread dough for its overnight rest in the fridge, and putting together the apple trifle filling, so all that's left tomorrow evening is the fun part:  baking, frying, and feasting!  

BIRK SWEATER with  Ane Marie Ambt Kofod @jojoknitwear

There's a reason the Birk has become a favorite: it's loose, laid-back, and the kind of sweater you'll reach for again and again. This classic Danish raglan is worked from the top down, so you can skip the seaming and just enjoy watching it take shape as you go.

In this class, we'll break down exactly how the Birk comes together, casting on at the neckline, working a few short rows so the back actually fits right (no gaping, we promise), and then splitting off into front, back, and sleeves one at a time, so you're never wrestling with a tangle of needles. (Been there, done that.)

Come learn the technique alongside a friendly group of fellow knitters, and get ready to make the Birk your own.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY DUCKLING: HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN with Franklin Habit

Hans Christian Andersen is arguably the most famous writer ever to come out of Denmark. His tales for children--156 stories collected into nine volumes--only began to appear in the 1830s, yet they’ve embedded themselves into our collective culture and consciousness. Many of us feel we know the plots of “The Ugly Duckling,” “Thumbelina,” “The Princess and the Pea,” and so on, by heart…but Andersen’s originals frequently make for disturbing reading.

In this tongue-in-cheek look at the tales and the man who wrote them, Franklin Habit ponders what place and purpose suffering, pain, and death have in children’s stories, and why Andersen so often served them forth.

When it comes to this presentation, there was really only one name on our list: Franklin Habit. He blends  a love of history with sharp wit  and just the right amount of mischief. Right?

JUST CUT IT OUT: DANISH PAPER SNOWFLAKES with Melissa Leapman 

No snow required. Just paper, scissors, and a bit of folding magic. 

In this session, we'll explore the traditional Danish technique for cutting paper snowflakes, a craft that's simple to pick up but endlessly fun to play with once you get the hang of it. 

Bring some paper and scissors and   and get ready to whip up your own snowstorm.

FACADES IN FIBER: A CHAT WITH ARTIST JAKE HENZLER @boy_knits_world

Join knitting designer and textile artist Jake Henzler (Boy Knits World) in this Q&A about his Copenhagen Building Blocks designs and how they were inspired by his year living in the Danish capital. 

Learn about Jake's approach to colourwork, how he translated the iconic architectural features of Copenhagen's residential streets into knitting, and some of his favourite places to shop for yarn in the city. 

RYE, REMOULADE, & RELISH with Marilyn Woodruff 

Get ready to eat like a true Dane. 

We'll be making the country's national dish: an open-face sandwich piled high with potatoes, crispy fried onions, a swipe of tangy Danish remoulade (move over, mayo), and bacon if you're feeling indulgent, all stacked up high on our homemade rye bread we started prepping the night before. 

While the bread bakes and the potatoes cook, we'll pull together a dreamy Danish apple trifle for dessert, because no Danish meal is complete without something sweet at the end.  

Come hungry. This one's a full sensory experience, and you get to eat your homework!

A GALAXY OF STARS: EXPLORING DANISH NIGHTSHIRT STAR MOTIFS with Mary Jane Mucklestone @mjmucklestone

Let’s explore the charming star motifs that twinkle across 18th- and 19th-century Danish nattrøjer (nightshirts)! In this class, we'll examine how a simple eight-pointed star motif has thousands of variations. 

Using graph paper and eventually stitching, we’ll explore how changing small pattern elements transforms one star into another. 

Though nattrøjer were traditionally knit in a single color using textured stitches, we'll begin by knitting our stars with two-color stranded knitting, then—if time allows—explore them in a single color as well. 

Come stitch the evolution of a star into your knitting!

THE ART OF HYGGE: SIP AND STITCH with Melissa Leapman

Hygge (pronounced "hoo-gah") is the Danish art of coziness. It features candlelight, warm drinks, slow moments, and good company. 

In this session, we'll live it out together: making gløgg (Danish mulled wine), learning a simple, meditative stitch pattern, and casting on for a scarf (optional kit available below). 

 Then we'll settle into good conversation (where the real hygge begins), getting to know our fellow knitters, needles in hand.
