 Welcome to Amsterdam! Check into our group hotel and get settled in before the adventure begins. Our KNITopia Tour Manager will be on hand to say hello, answer questions, and help you get your bearings (and possibly point you toward the nearest coffee). 

No scheduled activities today:  just arrive, unpack, and start meeting your fellow travelers. 

 Lace up your walking shoes and let's explore! Join a private guided walking tour through Amsterdam's canals, bridges, and postcard-worthy streets. 

The afternoon is yours to wander further, nap off the jet lag, or find a cozy café and get a few rows in before dinner. 

 Today we trade city streets for windmills! Enjoy a group visit to Zaanse Schans, where you'll see traditional Dutch windmills, wooden houses, and (fair warning) more clog shops than you knew existed. In the afternoon, we'll transfer to the beautiful AmaStella, your home away from home for the next week. 

Get ready to settle into your cabin, find your favorite spot on deck, and toast to the adventure ahead. 

 Amsterdam is home to 165 canals, and this morning we'll glide along some of the prettiest ones. Start the morning with a relaxing canal cruise before we set sail for Utrecht, a charming town well worth exploring on foot. 

Once we're settled in, enjoy one of the afternoon's class offerings with our industry experts and spend some time doing what you love most: knitting. 

Top-Down Sweater Construction with Isabell Kraemer

Ever wondered what's actually happening behind the scenes of your favorite sweater pattern? This workshop pulls back the curtain on top-down construction, so you can knit, customize, and troubleshoot with real confidence.

We'll cover how yokes are shaped, how increases build fit and structure, and how different construction styles, like raglan, circular yoke, and set-in sleeve, come together on the needles (spoiler: it's less mysterious than it looks). You'll also practice hands-on skills like picking up stitches, working short rows, and trying your garment on as you go, so you can catch fit issues before they become frog-worthy.

Through swatching and demonstration, we'll break garment construction down piece by piece, so you leave with a clearer knitting brain and plenty of ideas for making your next sweater fit you.

 Now You See It, Now You Don’t: Shadow Knitting with Franklin Habit

What if your knitting had a secret to tell? 

Shadow knitting, also called illusion knitting, uses stripes, garter stitch, and stockinette to create fabric that hides patterns in plain sight, patterns that appear or vanish entirely depending on the angle you're viewing from. It's part knitting technique, part optical illusion, and completely delightful to watch come to life.

In this class, we'll learn the mechanics of shadow knitting, including how to read the charts that make the magic happen, and then take it a step further by exploring how these patterns are designed. You'll even get to experiment with creating your own custom chart, so you can hide a message, a shape, or a little inside joke in your next project.

Come for the technique, stay for the moment your work suddenly reveals its secret.

Black Forest Hat and Cowl with Casapinka

Whether you're brand new to stranded knitting or a seasoned pro, this class has a project with your name on it: a commemorative cowl or hat featuring a Casapinka design inspired by our trip down the Rhine. It's the perfect souvenir, and one you'll actually want to wear.

We'll cover the fundamentals of stranded knitting with one hand, then work up to two hands if you're ready to level up, plus techniques for carrying and managing multiple colors cleanly as you go. Beginners will leave with a solid foundation, and experienced strandholders will pick up tips to make their colorwork even smoother.

By the end, you'll have new skills, a beautiful finished piece, and a colorful reminder of this trip for years to come.

 Düsseldorf, with an Optional Side Trip to Cologne 

As one of Germany's great hubs for culture, commerce, and architecture, Düsseldorf is a can't-miss stop on the Rhine, and today you'll have a couple of ways to experience it. Join a walking tour through the city's grand streets, then wind down with a tasting of Altbier, a local specialty brewed using traditional techniques.

Feeling a little more adventurous? Hop on a short trip to nearby Cologne and join a guided tour through its enchanting Old Town. You'll wander past landmarks like the Cologne Rathaus, Germany's oldest town hall, the Fishmarkt, dating all the way back to the 12th century, and the striking Great St. Martin Church.

However you spend the day, you'll come away with a deeper feel for the Rhine's rich history, one cobblestone street (or one Altbier) at a time.

 Rhine Gorge to Rüdesheim

Today we'll cruise through the UNESCO-designated Rhine Gorge, widely considered the most beautiful stretch of the entire river, before arriving in the charming winemaking town of Rüdesheim. Soak in the scenery from above with a gondola ride over the vineyards to the Niederwalddenkmal, then treat your taste buds to a wine tasting featuring the town's iconic local flavors.

Prefer to earn your wine? Lace up for a hike through the vineyards, or join a guided bike tour along the scenic riverside, both great ways to see Rüdesheim at a slightly more active pace.

Later, let Siegfried's Mechanical Instrument Cabinet charm you with its remarkable collection of self-playing instruments, a museum that's equal parts music and magic trick. Or settle in for the town's signature treat: Rüdesheimer coffee, ceremoniously prepared with brandy, coffee, and whipped cream, because vacation math says the calories don't count.

Colorful Slip Stitches with Isabell Kraemer

Want colorwork magic without the complexity of traditional stranded knitting? Slip stitches are your secret weapon. 

In this hands-on workshop, designed for adventurous beginners and experienced knitters alike, we'll explore how simple slipped stitches create surprising texture, depth, and eye-catching color effects, all while working with just one color per row (your yarn ends will thank you).

We'll start with the fundamentals: how slip stitch patterns work, how to read the charts and instructions behind them, and a few tips and tricks for choosing yarn that makes your motifs pop. From there, we'll dive into two-color slip stitch patterns that look far more complicated than they actually are (your secret to keep).

You'll practice several slip stitch motifs and build a swatch sampler to reference in future projects. By the end of class, you'll have the confidence to experiment with slip stitches on your own, plus a fun start on our class pattern to keep the momentum going.

Working with Antique and Vintage Knitting Patterns with Franklin Habit

Don’t let the tiny type and archaic language fool you: there’s a goldmine of beautiful, functional designs waiting to be rediscovered within the pages of Victorian and Edwardian books and magazines. 

In this session, we’ll discuss the history of patterns; the selection of appropriate yarns and needles; colors and fibers; methods for deciphering and troubleshooting arcane recipes; and “reverse engineering” from extant pieces. 

You don’t need to be a historian or re-enactor to enjoy this class–just a knitter with a curious mind.

 Making Waves with Marilyn Woodruff

Some stitches just refuse to sit still. In this class we'll play with a whole series of them — ripples, waves, and the kind of undulating textures that make a plain skein of yarn look like it's moving. You'll swatch your way through several variations, learn what makes a wave crest and a ripple curl, and walk away knowing how to drop these into any project you like. 

Then we cast on the Tahoe Moment Wrap.  Named for that pause you take at the top of the ridge — the one where the lake goes impossibly blue and you forget you were ever cold — this wrap builds striped chevrons into peaks and valleys, punctuated with eyelets that let the light through like sun on water. The color changing yarn does a lot of the heavy lifting, so the effect looks far more complicated than it actually is. (We won't tell.)

Ludwigshafen: Four Ways to Explore

Ludwigshafen is your gateway to four excursion options today, so take your pick based on how adventurous (or how leisurely) you're feeling.

Visit Heidelberg, a beautifully preserved medieval city tucked into the Neckar River Valley along Germany's famed Castle Road. There you'll discover the iconic red sandstone Heidelberg Castle, along with the Great Vat, an 18th-century wine cask that holds a staggering 49,000 gallons. 

Want to earn your castle views the hard way? Join a guided hike up the Philosopher's Path, aptly named for panoramic vistas over the city.

Prefer history of a different flavor? Visit Speyer, one of Germany's oldest cities, home to the largest Romanesque cathedral in Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the medieval Old Gate, known as the Altpörtel.

Or, if you're in the mood to pedal, join a guided bike tour along the shores of the Neckar River, complete with a cycling break to explore the picturesque medieval town of Ladenburg (leg day, but make it scenic).

However you spend the day, Ludwigshafen delivers no shortage of castles, cathedrals, and cobblestones.

 Strasbourg, France

Thanks to its spot right on the border, Strasbourg serves up the best of both worlds: French charm with a German accent (and plenty of pastries to prove it). 

Enjoy a short drive to the Place de la République before setting off on foot through the iconic "La Petite France" district, a neighborhood so picturesque it looks lifted straight from a fairytale.

Wander charming, half-timbered streets past the Cathédrale de Notre-Dame, home to its famous astronomical clock. Or, if two wheels sound more appealing than two feet, join a guided bike ride through the city and the leafy Parc de l'Orangerie.

However you spend your time here, one thing's for sure: you'll leave with a full camera roll and an even fuller stomach.

 You Can't Go Wrong: Reversible Cables with Melissa Leapman

  In this hands-on workshop, we'll explore cable patterns that look great on both sides. By the end of class, you'll amaze yourself (and everyone else) with fabrics that have completely different cables on each side! 

No sorcery required.

(Note: Participants should be very comfortable knitting typical cables prior to the class.)  

Learn Double Knitting with Casapinka

Ever wondered how knitters create colorful fabric that looks completely identical on both sides, no wrong side in sight? Join Casapinka for a hands-on introduction to this clever (and magical-looking) technique. 

You'll complete a rectangular bookmark right in class, giving you all the skills and confidence you need to tackle your first full double knitting pattern.

As a bonus, Casapinka will send you home with a brand-new double knitting pattern as a gift, so the fun doesn't stop when class ends.

Creating a Beautiful Bandana Cowl with Isabell Kraemer

Ever fallen in love with a skein of yarn purely for its gorgeous colors, then had no idea what to actually make with it? (We've all been there.) 

This workshop solves that problem. We'll let a beautiful skein do the heavy lifting while you create a stunning accessory full of movement, texture, and personality.

A Bandana cowl is a playful hybrid: part triangular shawl and part easy, casual cowl. It's as engaging to knit as it is wearable, with a stitch pattern that adds texture and rhythm to every row, so the making is just as satisfying as the wearing.

Together, we'll explore how gradient and self-striping yarns behave in different stitch patterns, and how small design choices can completely transform the look of a finished project.

Breisach, Germany

Breisach is your gateway to several excursions today, each offering a different flavor of this beautiful region.

Step back in time with a visit to Colmar, an enchanting Alsatian town that looks almost exactly as it did in the 16th century (no time machine required). On your walking tour, admire the historic architecture and keep an eye out for a small-scale Statue of Liberty, a nod to the fact that the statue's sculptor was born right here in Colmar.

Looking for something more active? Cycle through the surrounding countryside, or hike through the heart of the Kaiserstuhl, a volcanic region in the Rhine plain known for its striking landscapes, vineyards, and exceptional biodiversity.

Fairytale streets or volcanic vineyards, today's version of adventure is entirely up to you.

Sweater Confidence with Marilyn Woodruff

There's a particular kind of heartbreak known only to knitters: two hundred hours of work, a beautiful yarn, and a finished sweater that fits like it was made for someone else entirely. This class is about making sure that never happens to you again.

We're going to take sweaters apart — conceptually, not with scissors — and look at what's really going on. How the major construction methods work and what each one does for a body. How yarn choice decides whether your sweater drapes like silk or stands up like a barn door. How to take measurements that reflect the body you actually have, today, not the one on the size chart.

And yes, we're going to talk about swatches. Specifically, about how to make one that tells the truth. We've all met the other kind — the dirty rotten liar that promises 20 stitches to four inches and then delivers a sweater fit for a very stylish giraffe. You'll learn how to catch them before they cost you a month.

Then the fun part: fit as a design choice. Where to put the interest so the eye goes where you want it. How to use darts, short rows, and shaping to make a pattern accommodate your actual shape instead of the other way around. 

The adjustments are less intimidating than they sound, and once you've made them once, you'll make them forever.

 Understated Yet Overachieving with Casapinka

Not every showstopper needs a rainbow. 

This class features a sweater designed exclusively by Casapinka, built entirely around the idea that a single color, worked in the right stitch pattern, can be just as striking as any colorwork piece (and with way fewer ends to weave in).

You'll knit in DK weight yarn, your color of choice, on a US 6 / 4mm needle. Full yarn amounts will be posted once the sweater has been test knit, so stay tuned and stay patient. A little insider knowledge before you pick your shade: the lighter the color, the more your texture will show, so choose accordingly if you want those stitches to steal the spotlight.

   A Sense of Proportion: A Glorious Compendium of Methods for Knitting without Tapes and Rulers with Franklin Habit

A tape measure is a wonderful thing. So is a knitting pattern. But have you dreamt of being freed from both, and working your way from cast on to finished garment neither one nor the other? 

You can. 

The history of knitting is full of time-tested and remarkably simple methods for using the proportions of the human body–and of the knitting itself–to determine stitch counts, shapings, and measurements to yield garments with a custom fit.

Across the length of our time together, students will learn about useful relative proportions of the human body, as well as formulae and folk wisdom for hats, mittens, socks, scarves, and shawls.

Basel and Lake Lucerne

After breakfast, it's time to say goodbye to our home on the water and disembark the ship. Before heading to Lake Lucerne, enjoy a highlights tour of Basel, Switzerland's third-largest city.

Long known as an important center for universities, banking, and trade, Basel wears its history well. You'll see it in the city's medieval Town Hall and its exquisite 18th-century patrician homes, proof that this city has always known how to do things with style.

From there, we'll depart for Lake Lucerne, with a very important stop along the way: a group tasting at Läderach Chocolate, because no trip through Switzerland is complete without a little chocolate detour.

 Lake Lucerne

Today, explore Lucerne on a walking tour through a city where the Reuss River meets the sparkling waters of Lake Lucerne. Small cobblestone streets, fountain-filled squares, and frescoed buildings give the city its storybook charm (yes, you'll want to photograph literally everything).

Easily the symbol of the city, the Chapel Bridge is a medieval covered bridge and one of the oldest wooden bridges in Europe, so consider this your obligatory (and very worthwhile) bridge selfie stop.

 The afternoon is yours to enjoy freely, whether that means shopping, relaxing lakeside, or finding a cozy spot to get a few more rows in.

Lake Lucerne and Mt Rigi

Check out of the hotel and, before our motorcoach transfer to Zurich, treat yourself to a scenic cruise across the lake, because the views only get better from here. Glide across the water and take a moment to enjoy the sights before the day's main event begins.

Then, you'll ascend Mount Rigi, affectionately known as the "Queen of the Mountains," via a cable car ride (because queens don't climb, they arrive). Rising above the surrounding peaks and valleys, Rigi has been welcoming travelers with its sweeping views for centuries, and it's easy to see why this spot has earned its royal reputation.

From the top, take in breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the lake, and the surrounding countryside below, the kind of view that makes you want to just stand still for a while and take it all in. 

Once you've soaked up every last bit of scenery, it's back down to earth and on to Zurich, where you'll check into your hotel and get settled in for the next leg of the adventure.

 Zurich

Switzerland's largest city seamlessly blends its historic past with its progressive future, and today's city tour puts that mix on full display. 

You'll wind through streets where centuries-old architecture stands comfortably alongside modern energy, a reminder that Zurich has never been in a rush to choose between the two.

One of the top experiences in Zurich is a visit to Old Town, where you'll find yourself surrounded by medieval houses, historic churches, and cobblestone charm at every turn. 

From there, step into the modern era with Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world's most famous shopping streets, lined with everything from cozy cafés to high-end boutiques (browsing is free, resisting temptation is optional).

Zurich offers the perfect final stop on this Rhine adventure, a city that feels both timeless and thoroughly modern all at once.

Ladderback Jacquard Workshop with Meret Bützberger

Join renowned Swiss designer Meret Bützberger in her own studio for an introduction to Ladderback Jacquard, a clever and highly useful technique for managing longer floats in colorwork. 

If you've ever wrestled with loose, snaggy floats stretching across the back of your knitting, this class is about to become your new favorite trick.

You'll learn how to create additional "ladder" stitches on the wrong side of your work and how to use them to neatly catch and manage your floats as you knit. 

Once your colorwork is complete, you'll learn how to remove these temporary stitches, leaving behind clean, secure floats and a beautifully finished fabric on both sides (no more floats snagging on your rings, we promise).

Beyond the technique itself, you'll get the rare opportunity to knit alongside Meret in her personal studio, soaking up her expertise and Swiss design sensibility in a truly intimate setting.

After breakfast, it's time to bid farewell to Switzerland (and, let's be honest, probably to a suitcase that's a little heavier than when you arrived). Take one last look at those mountain views, savor a final Swiss coffee, and soak in the memories before preparing for your return flight home.

It's hard to say goodbye to new friends, new skills, and a trip full of unforgettable moments along the Rhine, but the good news is you're going home with a head full of ideas, a bag full of yarn, and stories to tell for years to come.
