Fall in love with the stash you already own!

Let's ring in 2027 with a resolution that's actually fun to keep: knit more, spend less, and finally use the gorgeous yarn you couldn't resist bringing home. Now it's time to make something with it!

New Year, Old Yarn is a cozy virtual weekend packed with live classes that turn bulging bins and lonely single skeins into projects you'll be proud to wear and give.

Shop Your Stash sends you on a no-cost shopping spree through your own shelves. No Yarn Left Behind with Yarn Snob Keith Leonard finds a home for every last yard, and Scrapify Your Next Sweater shows you how to turn leftovers into a sweater that looks planned from the very first stitch.

You'll also pick up skills that keep paying off long after the weekend ends. Helix Knitting with Romi Hill makes smooth, jogless stripes from any mix of colors, and Mitered Squares turn odds and ends into bold, modern pieces one satisfying square at a time. Stashbusting with (Only Kind of) a Plan is for knitters who like a little freedom with their structure. And Cooking from Your Pantry Stash brings the same thrifty magic to the kitchen, because your pantry deserves some love too.

I'm also thrilled to welcome two very special guests. Designer Xandy Peters will lead a fun, hands-on project class on his amazing Color Warp Cowl, a perfect way to play with a mix of colors from your stash and end up with something truly eye-catching. Then settle in for Julie Dubreux's very serious (not!) confession-ary tale, Me, My Stash, and I. It's an honest, hilarious look at the joys, the guilt, and the "how did this skein get here?" moments every knitter knows. (I feel seen.)

Can't make every session live? No problem. Every class is recorded and available to watch for a full month afterward, so you can knit along at your own pace, rewatch the tricky parts, and keep your resolution going well past January.

Note: All sessions will be recorded and participants will have access to them for 3 weeks after the event.

SCRAPPY BAKING with Marilyn Woodruff

This weekend, we'll be learning how to turn your yarn stash into treasures. Tonight let's work the same magic on your pantry!

In this cozy, bake-along class, we'll whip up treats together from our own kitchens using flour, sugar, and whatever odds and ends are hiding in the back of the cupboard. That last handful of chocolate chips? The half-bag of oats? The lonely jar of jam?

Everything's invited to the party, and no special shopping trip is required.

You’ll learn a few simple base recipes, plus easy swaps for when you’re out of key ingredients.

Think of it as learning a basic knitting pattern and then playing with the textures and color changes!

Saturday, January 9 9:00-11:00 AM Eastern

SHOP YOUR STASH: THE YARN STORE THAT'S ALWAYS OPEN with Marilyn Woodruff

Your favorite yarn shop is right under your roof, and everything on the shelves is already paid for. Time to go shopping!

In this class, Marilyn Woodruff shows you how to turn bins of skeins and leftover bits into a stash you can actually shop from.  And the whole inventory was curated by someone with excellent taste: You!

You'll learn to:

  •  Read your yarn like a pro. Fiber content, weight, grist, and how a yarn is constructed, so you know which yarns will play nicely together.
  •  Run your own yarn store. Simple ways to take inventory of full skeins and leftovers, plus how to skein, label, and organize scraps so they're ready to knit.
  • Pick colors with confidence. Color wheel basics plus monochromatic, analogous, and complementary schemes, and how to mix solids, tonals, variegated yarns, and speckles.
  •  Put it all together. Fades, gradients, marling, and magic balls that turn odds and ends into one-of-a-kind projects, like the Roadtrip Cowl, which was made for minis and works just as well with leftovers.

You'll leave knowing how to work with the yarn you already own. No credit card needed.

Saturday, January 9 12:00 Noon-1:00 PM Eastern

ME, MY STASH, AND I with Julie Dubreux @JulieKnitsInParis

Where does stash yarn come from? Is it born that way, or does it just happen when you're not looking? What does your stash say about you? Is "knitting from stash" real, or just a knitter's urban legend? Should a lady ever reveal the size of her stash?

And the big one: would Marie Kondo judge?

Julie tackles these burning questions and more in her Serious Scientific Study of Stash, Stashing, and Stashers. And yes, Julie can be serious. Sort of. For a minute or two. Maybe.

She'll dive headfirst (truly!) into her own stash to explore the whys and hows of yarn collecting, then share her best advice on storing, organizing, and finally making peace with your stash.

No skein will be left unturned!

Saturday, January 9 2:00-4:00 PM Eastern

THE SCRAPPY ZIG ZAG COLOR WARP COWL with Xandy Peters

The Color Warp Cowl needs just about 10 yards of each color, and it turns those little scraps into bolts of zigzagging color.

Sure, it's technically intarsia, but it's far friendlier than it looks. You'll use nothing but knits and purls, and there's no twisting yarns together at the color changes. The technique pulls ideas from wedge weave, bargello, and warp knitting, a commercial method, and combines them into one cowl with a construction unlike anything else in your project bag.

Xandy's inspiration came from an African basket made of repurposed telephone wire, where a spiraling design suddenly switches direction and sends lightning bolts of color out from the center.

In class, you'll cast on a mini version of the cowl and get comfortable with the zigzag technique before tackling the full-size piece.

As a bonus, Xandy will reveal how to keep a gazillion bobbins organized during a big colorwork project, so your knitting stays a work of art instead of a tangle.

One fun twist: please have access to your kitchen during class. Who knew your kitchen was a knitting tool?

Saturday, January 9 5:00-6:00 PM Eastern

NO YARN LEFT BEHIND: CREATING ART WITH LINEN STITCH with Keith Leonard @Yarn_Snob_Keith

Give your leftover yarn a beautiful second act in this relaxing, technique-packed class.

Working with fingering-weight scraps, you'll learn to create stunning, artful pieces by fading and alternating two or three colors at a time. There are no strict rules here, just a gentle flow from one color to the next. Keith will show you how to blend colors with intention and weave a variety of skeins together seamlessly, then finish with a braided fringe that means no tails to weave in. (Yes, really!)

Along the way, you'll pick up easy-to-remember tricks for fixing common mistakes, so a slipped stitch never ruins your rhythm.

The swatch you make in class does double duty as a creative exercise and a gauge swatch, so you'll be ready to launch straight into a full-size shawl or scarf.

Keith will also share inspiring pattern ideas to help you picture the possibilities.

Think of it as part knitting class, part creative retreat: a calming, freeing way to sharpen your skills and finally put those beloved leftovers to work.

LEFTOVER NIGHT: PANTRY COOKING MEETS MITERED SQUARES with Melissa Leapman

Who says leftovers are boring? Tonight, they're the stars of the show!

We'll start in the kitchen, raiding the pantry for those half-used onions, partial bags of frozen veggies, forgotten cans, and "I'll use it someday" jars,  then turn them into a warm, delicious dinner with zero trips to the store.

You'll pick up some easy, mix-and-match recipe formulas that work with whatever you've got on hand, so you'll never stare into the cupboard wondering what to cook again.

Once the dishes are done, grab your yarn scraps for a lesson in mitered squares. If you've ever wondered what to do with all those little leftover balls, this is the answer. Each square is knit directly onto the one before, building a bold, patchwork-style piece one block at a time, and best of all, there's no seaming! It's relaxing, a little addictive, and the perfect way to turn odds and ends into something you'll actually use.

Come hungry, bring your scraps, and let's make the most of everything we've got.

Because making "something from nothing" never felt (or tasted) so good!

SCRAP-IFY YOUR NEXT SWEATER with Safiyyah Talley

Is there anything better than finding the sweater pattern of your dreams and casting on that very same day? No waiting for yarn to arrive, no agonizing over colorways, just pure, instant knitting joy!

In this two-hour class, you'll learn how to make it happen using scrap yarn straight from your stash. By marling, which means holding strands together, you'll create sweaters with gorgeous, intentional texture and exactly as much (or as little) color as you like. Subtle and tweedy? Bold and wildly colorful? The choice is yours!

Here's what we'll explore together:

  • A foolproof marling technique that turns mismatched leftovers into a beautifully blended fabric.
  • How to pick the perfect pattern so your marled sweater looks completely on purpose.
  • How to choose yarns that keep your gauge consistent and your fabric cohesive, from cuff to collar.

Come with a few scraps and a dream sweater in mind, and leave ready to cast on before the end of the weekend!

STASHBUSTING WITH (ONLY KIND OF) A PLAN with Edie Eckman

You know that pile of yarn that's been staring at you, waiting for you to have a brilliant idea? Edie gets it.

In this class, she'll show you how to turn random leftovers and lonely oddballs into projects that look like you planned them all along, even when you absolutely didn't. Drawing on her own knit and crochet stash-busting adventures, many of them invented on the fly, Edie will spill her secrets: how she picks which yarns get to hang out together, how color, texture, and repetition turn chaos into harmony, and how she keeps her cool when a project starts wandering off in its own direction.

You'll learn how to take inventory of what you've got, make a plan without knowing quite where you're going, convince yarns that seem to have nothing in common to get along, and roll with it when your stash starts calling the shots.

Plus, you'll get a peek into Edie's own stash (no judgment, please!), and you might even leave with official permission to buy a new skein or two. Purely for the good of the project, of course!

HELIX KNITTING with Romi Hill

Say goodbye to jogs, farewell to floats, and hello to spiraling stripes that swirl around your knitting like a barber pole at a party!

Helix knitting is the delightfully simple trick for striping in the round without that awkward little step where the colors change. Instead of stopping and starting, your colors take turns chasing each other around and around in a never-ending spiral, and since you only knit with one color at a time, there are no floats getting tangled in the fun.

Fair warning: once you try it, you may find yourself "accidentally" stash diving for every color you own just to see how they look spinning together. Is it magic? Kind of! But let's be honest, isn't all knitting a little bit magical?

Bring your scraps, your sense of adventure, and maybe a little extra yarn, because these stripes are seriously hard to stop making!

Master designer and teacher Romi makes it easy and fun.

SCRAPPY CAPPY with Amy Gunderson

Got scraps? Love hats? Then grab your leftovers and pull up a chair, because you're in exactly the right place!

Join Amy for a stashbusting adventure that turns those little balls of yarn you can't bear to toss into a hat you'll actually want to wear.

Scrappy Cappy uses a clever modular construction that builds your hat piece by piece, and every section is a fresh chance to play with color. Bright and bold, soft and subtle, or a happy jumble of everything in the bin, the color combinations are truly endless.

Best of all, Amy will show you how to work in your ends as you go, so when you finish your last stitch, you're actually finished. No marathon tail-weaving session required!

Come for the dazzling construction, stay for the color fun, and leave with a new favorite way to turn your scraps into something you'll reach for all winter long.
