From Boo Hoo to Whoo Hoo: Fixing knitting mistakes!

VIRTUAL KNITTING WEEKEND, APRIL 19-21, 2024

From a twisted stitch, to a cable turned the wrong way, to a dropped brioche stitch (ack!), every knitter deals with knitting mistakes.

Let's spend a few days via zoom learning how to fix common knitting errors--and even how to prevent them from happening in the first place!

I've gathered some of my favorite industry geniuses and friends to confess their most common knitting snafus (I mean to teach us how to overcome and  avoid errors).

All sessions will be recorded and made available to participants for three weeks following the event.

To err is human, but to knit is, well, divine!

ONLY A LIMITED NUMBER OF SPACES ARE AVAILABLE!

SCHEDULE

Friday April 19 10:00 AM-12:00 Noon Eastern

FIXING BASIC KNITTING MISTAKES: BEYOND TINKING AND FROGGING

with Molly Conroy-Ungerecht

Becoming a carefree knitter not only takes time but also requires the knowledge about reading your

knitting, understanding what causes mistakes, and learning to fix mistakes without having

to frog or tink--and knowing when to do each!

In class, master how to ladder down and fix mistakes on both the knit and purl side of stockinette and in garter stitch. Also, learn what causes random holes in your fabric (who, me?) and how to deal with them without ripping.

Be the boss of your knitting!

Friday April 19 1:00-3:00 PM Eastern

GETTING GAUGE

with Kate Atherley

You’ve seen the information in the pattern, and you’ve been told – over and over again! – that it’s important, but do you really “get” gauge?

This class answers all your questions about gauge: what it actually means, why it matters, how to check it and what to do about it.

We’ll talk about proper swatching technique – including tips for making it easier, and when you can avoid it entirely.

Most important, we'll discuss strategies and solutions for when you just can’t get it!

Friday April 19 4:00-6:00 PM Eastern

FROM HOMEMADE TO HANDMADE

with Marilyn Woodruff

This hands-on class will provide you with practical tips, tricks, and hacks that will help you solve the pesky issues many knitters encounter while knitting.

A few examples of what you will learn include how to:

  • Make your k2tog and ssk decreases mirror each other PERFECTLY for beautiful lace
  • Make your ribbing and cables look more even
  • Bind off evenly without worrying about tension (and how to avoid flare-ups in lace bind-offs)
  •  Knit jogless stripes and beautiful stripes in ribbing
  • Make a long-tail cast on that will NEVER let you down (no more long-tail regret!!)
  • Lose that “hitch” at the end of a bind-off in the round
  • …and more!

Saturday April 20 10:00 AM-12:00 Noon Eastern

BACK FROM THE EDGE

with Romi Hill

What happens when your edges are misbehaving?

Join teacher and designer Romi Hill for an exploration of ways to set up the edges of your knitting to behave better from the start and how to fix them when they’re messy or floppy.

It’s the little details like clean edges that elevate a project from “home made” to hand crafted”!

Come learn from the master herself!

Saturday April 20 1:00-3:00 PM Eastern

BEHOLD THE MAGIC OF SCHEMATICS!

with Sarah Peasley

Whether you're a newbie maker trying to follow a pattern, a confident maker wanting to adapt a pattern, or a new or established designer wanting to design a garment or publish a pattern, a super handy tool that you definitely need in your crafty toolbox is a SCHEMATIC.

What can a schematic help you with? SO. MANY. THINGS. Here are just a few: size choices, lengthening or shortening, design options, yarn usage, and interpreting what the heck it is that the pattern is asking you to do.

In this class, Sarah breaks down the mystery of schematics line by line, holds your hand (virtually) as you draw your own schematic, and challenges you to use your schematic as a tool for project planning and for making alterations.

Saturday April 20 4:00-5:00 PM Eastern

DUPLICATE STITCH TO THE RESCUE!

with Melissa Leapman

You'll be amazed that lowly duplicate stitch is the secret superhero of your knitting tool backpack.

In this hands-on session, we'll use this simple embroidery stitch to fix numerous knitting mistakes after the fact, from colorwork to cabling to finishing and more!

Sunday April 21 10:00 AM-12:00 Noon Eastern

FIXING MISTAKES IN LACE

with Kate Atherley

For knitters who have successfully worked one or two lace patterns, this class focuses on building lace knitting confidence and skills with a focus on fixing mistakes.

Through hands-on practice, we’ll learn how to deal with missing or misplaced yarnovers, incorrect or misplaced decreases, and other messed-up patternwork.

We’ll also discuss mistake prevention: the use of the lifeline, how to keep track of your knitting progress on your pattern, and pro tips for ensuring you stay on track.

Sunday April 21 1:00-3:00 PM Eastern

FIXING MULTI-STITCH MISTAKES

with Molly Conroy-Ungerecht

When we first learn to fix our knitting mistakes, we learn to drop down and fix one stitch at a time.  This works great for simple mistakes in simple fabrics. But what about errors in increases and decreases, cables, lace, and other knitting techniques that require using more than one stitch?

In this fun  hands-on class,  you will create a sampler full of mistakes and we will use pro techniques to fix them!

Sunday April 21 4:00-6:00 PM Eastern

Sunday April 21 4:00-6:00 PM Eastern

FIXING MISTAKES IN BRIOCHE

with Xandy Peters

If you enjoy knitting brioche stitch but still feel lost if a mistake occurs, this class will get you back on track.

Brioche mistakes, like the stitch itself, are unique from other knitting mistakes and often require a special set of skills.

In this class, we will look at the  structure of brioche fabric and learn when and how to rip back multiple rows, fix laddered stitches, and even correct a missed increase or decrease.

We will also learn how to spot mismatched, dropped, or twisted tuck stitches.

NOTE: ALL TIMES ARE LISTED IN EASTERN TIME.
